It emphasizes the use of natural modalities\u2014such as nutrition, lifestyle counseling and botanical medicine\u2014to promote wellness and treat illness. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) work according to a set of basic principles\u2014the <a title=\"Principles of Naturopathic Medicine\" href=\"https:\/\/cnme.org\/naturopathic-medicine-an-overview\/#principles\">Principles of Naturopathic Medicine<\/a>\u2014that include such things as stimulating the healing power of the body and addressing the underlying causes of disease, rather than focusing on alleviating symptoms. The practice of naturopathic medicine requires understanding illness within the context of a person\u2019s whole life.<\/p>\n<p>The naturopathic approach to healthcare also emphasizes patient education and self-care. Naturopathic medicine can be used in conjunction with conventional medical therapies to support the body\u2019s healing processes\u2014an approach referred to as \u201cintegrative medicine.\u201d Most NDs establish a private practice or enter into an existing naturopathic medical practice, though in some cases NDs work in collaboration in a variety of clinical settings with MDs, DCs, DOs, acupuncturists, and other healthcare practitioners\u2014and they are trained to refer patients for emergency and other situations when necessary. It should be noted that while training in naturopathic medicine may open up a variety of career options in diverse medical settings for individual practitioners, CNME\u2019s accreditation standards are not intended to prepare graduates for practice in conventional or integrative medical hospitals and clinics, and the CNME does not in any way represent that such career options will be available to graduates of CNME-accredited and candidate programs.<\/p>\n<p>While NDs primarily use natural healing approaches, they are also trained to perform minor surgeries, such as removing cysts or suturing superficial wounds, as well as to utilize prescription drugs under certain circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;
